Reggio Emilia Approach to Early Learning:

Reggio Emilia-Reggio Inspired

The Reggio Emilia approach to early learning was developed by Loris Malaguzzi and the citizens of the small Italian town of Reggio Emilia. This philosophy embraces four main ideas:

  1. Children are active participants in learning
  2. Environment plays a significant role in early learning
  3. Parents, teachers and children are collaborators in the process of learning
  4. Documentation is learning made visible
Loris Malaguzzi believed that children are endowed with 'a hundred languages', or infinate ways and means to express themselves. In a Reggio classroom children are seen as curious, competent and connected and learn best by doing. At Dolphin Tales Preschool, teachers provide varied and interesting classroom experiences, which provoke children to explore and discover. The flexible program is based on children's interests, strengths and needs. Projects, or explorations, provide an impetus for discovery. They may last only a few days, or may extend over a period of months. They may involve only a few children, or the whole class: as long as the children's interest is sustained.

Documentation of the children's explorations, in the form of photographs and written notes, can be found on the walls of the classroom, and are valuable tools to understanding and revisiting the learning process.

Our Programs: Fall / Spring, and Summer Programs

The Dolphin Tales Reggio Inspired Preschool program is similar to many other preschool programs. We begin our day with explorations. During this time children are given opportunities to explore the materials provided. Teachers gently guide and learn alongside the children, while they also observe and listen. Information gathered during these observations and conversations is used to determine the future direction of explorations and projects.

Following exploration, children are encouraged to help with tidy-up, and then sit for a healthy snack in small intimate groups.

Classroom

A short group time follows the snack. This is an opportunity for children to sing songs, listen to stories, and learn how to be together in a larger group.

We head outside after group, to play in our large, treed yard. Outside play time is 30 to 45 minutes, depending on the weather. Outdoor activities vary. A fairy garden, mud kitchen, raised beds for growing plants, a big sand box, and a bike path for riding are examples of some of the activities offered.

Registrations for both the Fall/Spring and Summer programs begin in March of each year, although registrations are ongoing through the year, depending on space availability.
